Say the word Eilat to an Israeli, and a smile comes to his face. Eilat is escapism without a passport. Eilat is booming, honky tonk in the sun. It features indoor ice skating, boardwalks, boat excursions, snorkeling and beach. It is a duty free zone which attracts both internal and foreign tourists to its air-conditioned malls. For the more adventurous, Petra, in Jordan, beckons, an easy day trip from your Eilat hotel room.
The city has plans to build a golf course and develop a sports center. Primary to it’s growth plans the airport will be moved north out of town to accommodate more flights. In a few years train service will join this southernmost port town to the rest of Israel in a quick two hour journey. In the meantime, fly down, or enjoy the desert drive via the Dead Sea or the Negev Desert. We’ll see you there.
